Congratulations!

You are probably pregnant or orienting yourself which support you need during pregnancy and the birth of your child(ren).

Are you pregnant and looking for a doula? Maybe you had a bad experience or a difficult first birth? Maybe something happened in your past that makes you look for extra support in addition to your partner during this pregnancy and birth? Whatever it is, you want an experienced doula who understands what you’ve been through.

A doula is traditionally a ‘Greek word’ and means ‘serving woman’. After researching mother-child bonding in the 1990s by two pediatricians John Kennel and Marshall Klaus, accidentally discovered that women gave birth faster, needed less pain relief and fewer caesarean sections if women received continuous support during childbirth. A new occupation was born and shaped in the first association ‘DONA’ in America. Since then, the doula has gained worldwide fame.

A doula does not medically support women during their pregnancy & birth & maternity period, but through physical, emotional, mental support.
She informs you about the expectations surrounding giving birth, provides guidance with regard to information, birth plan, birth positions and massage techniques and helps you to maintain control during your pregnancy, delivery and postpartum period.

As a woman I have always had a fascination with ‘women’s lives’ and how we are shaped due to our cultural background, social upbringing and class. In preparation for my own motherhood, I started as a pregnancy yoga teacher and in addition I was asked to support women during home births and hospital births.

Further I taught young medical and midwifery students the art of an internal & speculum examination. Trained by Sexologist Rik van Lunsen I learned that many women have sexual trauma in their past and  how this can effect birthing. In 2010-2012 I introduced the research ‘How do pregnant women experience the care offered by a birth coach’ at the Amsterdam UMC and led to a permanent paid position as a clinical doula for more than twelve years.

Would you like to meet me?  I give you a free phone consultation with no obligations for any further guidance.

Doula Services

Pregnancy & Birth guidance

The first consultation will take place online and is free of charge. During this session, we will explore your needs and assess whether I can provide the right support in the pregnancy and birth process.

If we decide to work together, you will receive a contract with the associated terms and conditions. After the first deposit, we will start collecting relevant information specific to your pregnancy and birth.

Subsequently, three more appointments are scheduled, which means that we will meet four times in total before the birth. I will provide you with support throughout the entire birthing process. With your permission, we will create a group app in which you can indicate who is represented (for example a mother or friend, in addition to your partner and doula). This group app will serve as our first point of contact for any changes or questions, in addition to the scheduled consultations. Of course, you are welcome to call between 9:00 and 17:00 for questions. If you suspect a birth, always call me directly.

Two weeks before the due date, I am available 24/7, until two weeks after this date. If an induction takes place between 36 and 37 weeks, I will also be present. When labor starts, I will come to your home or we will meet at the hospital, and I will stay with your labor until after the baby is born, and will only leave when it is appropriate.

After the birth, I will visit you to discuss your experiences.

My work area includes the North Holland region and the Utrecht region.

Masterclasses for professionals

A large group of women who give birth in a hospital are afraid of losing control and being overruled. Doctors are focused on the medical problem and focused on action. Time pressure ensures that the emotional value of pregnancy and childbirth receives less attention than it deserves. How can you, as a woman, maintain control over your care path? How do you communicate from a vulnerable position? How do you start a conversation with healthcare providers? These are challenges that a pregnant woman encounters during her pregnancy and childbirth. In a masterclass, we try to think along in a solution-oriented way about how we can remove obstacles to improve woman-oriented care. The intention is that you give direction to your work within the current birth landscape in an inspired and with renewed self-confidence.

“The prenatal foot massage felt like a must-have for me as a doula and masseuse.

With this massage I can guide my clients even better. The prenatal foot massage has a relaxing effect, calms the mind and can help clear (old) blockages. I also experienced the massage myself and it was a wonderful experience.

As far as I’m concerned, this is a must-have for all doulas!”

Pre-postnatal massage

The aim is to train professionals in providing pre-postnatal massage to pregnant women who need relaxation in the last weeks of their pregnancy, delivery or postpartum period.

A pre-postnatal massage specifically appeals to the parasympathetic nervous system, which creates space for emotional experience and helps to process and integrate old memories. This gentle and easy-to-learn massage has a deeply relaxing impact on an overstimulated nervous system.

The various techniques aim to provide the necessary knowledge and skills to perform the massage effectively and safely. These techniques and tools are tailored to the needs of pregnant women and women who experience stress during pregnancy and postpartum.

Some of the topics covered are:

1. You will learn about the possible effects of a stressful history, the loss of a baby or premature birth on the mental and emotional health of women. 2. You will gain insight into the specific benefits of different massages, such as reducing stress and anxiety, improving blood circulation and promoting healthy sleep. How to prepare the body for the upcoming delivery and activate contractions once delivery has started. It promotes breastfeeding and the bond between mother and child during the postpartum period.

3. You will learn the most important precautions to take when performing a massage, including contraindications and possible risks.

4. You will learn how a massage calms the parasympathetic nervous system, the effects of tactile touch that are specifically tailored to pregnant women, such as soft touch (effleurage) and helps her relax and reconnect with her body and baby. In addition, you will learn how to use tools such as massage oil, pillows and positions.

This training is given with a minimum of 6 students. You can register via mamabevaltgoed@gmail.com or call 0613304832. The training can also be given at various locations in the Netherlands on request.

“The itching on my arms and back made me go crazy and I didn’t sleep for weeks because of this, the cause was most likely gestational cholestasis. Induction of labor had been carefully discussed before, so when the doctor made the decision in consultation with us, it did not come completely out of the blue. It was a shock (and relief) that we were allowed to come the next day. The end of itching and misery in sight and we were really looking forward to our baby girl!”

Online Masterclass High Risk Pregnancies

Pregnancy is a special period in a woman’s life, but can be accompanied by various risks, such as gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, preeclampsia, pregnancy itch, post-term pregnancy or a twin pregnancy. You as a doula want information and practical tools, because how do I prepare my client for an induction?

This masterclass has several goals:

1. Knowledge transfer: Who is at your bedside. Medical terms. Information about hospital policy. What steps are taken before and during an induction. What choices does my client have? What is realistic expectation management and how do I support my client in this? The course aims to provide doulas with up-to-date knowledge about induction and ensuring a personalized care plan.

2. Multidisciplinary collaboration: The course emphasizes the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration in the care of high-risk pregnancies. Doulas learn to work together with other professionals, such as midwives and gynecologists, to offer an integrated experience to pregnant women.

The ultimate goal is to improve the quality of care for pregnant women with high-risk pregnancies. By increasing knowledge, developing skills, and promoting multidisciplinary collaboration, doulas can be better prepared and equipped to address the challenges of high-risk pregnancies and improve maternal and child health outcomes.
